I felt excited and prompted to make the move from my small town in southern Indiana, but stepping off that flight into the Salt Lake City airport is an experience I’ll never forget. At the culmination of months of planning and anticipation, my heart and stomach dropped to the floor, and something felt terribly wrong. The thought “Don’t move here” came to my mind.
I don’t think I’d ever felt more confused in my life. Why was I feeling this way when a prompting brought me there in the first place?
I’m not someone who hides her emotions well, so I shared my sudden uneasiness with my dad and grandparents, and decided to stay with them while my dad was in town through the end of the week.
That week was a whirlwind. There were heart-to-hearts with my grandparents, tough conversations with my parents—who disagreed about what I should do at the time—and message after message from well-intentioned friends and family members urging me to “just give it a chance!” because “you’re just nervous, it’ll be okay.”
I was confused by the unfolding events, but I couldn’t deny the prompting that I wasn’t supposed to stay there; I was supposed to go back home. After seeking further confirmation through scripture study and prayer, I knew without a doubt that I had to go back to Indiana.
Elder Renlund tells us, “The second element of the framework is that we receive personal revelation only within our purview and not within the prerogative of others.”
As much as I wanted someone else to make the impossible decision for me, I was the only person entitled to that revelation, and it was essential for me to learn how to receive it.
In the months and years that followed, the Lord made it clear to me how and why that series of events unfolded the way it did. Acting in faith and following personal revelation blessed my life in ways I never imagined and kick-started my journey of learning how to seek personal revelation and more fully trust in the Lord.
I have the confidence to claim personal revelation for myself. I trust what God has already revealed to me and work to receive and understand the guidance that is promised as I travel the covenant path.
